Senior Bingo Parties at Calumet City Library

Here Come the Seniors at Calumet City Library!

Senior Scrabble has been scheduled to be held at the Calumet City Public Library.  This event is part of a concerted effort by the Adult Services Department of the library to increase the involvement of seniors in library programing.

Library Bingo Parties, Book Discussions and Now Scrabble

To make the best possible use of library facilities, the Adult Services Department is busy creating new and interesting programs for area seniors.  To further that end, every three months seniors get together at the library for a Senior Bingo Party.  Once a month, an Afternoon Book Discussion is held with seniors in mind.  Senior library users are actively involved in both periodic events.

Since the attendance at each current event is so well-populated, the Adult Services Department decided to add a third event.  The first Senior Scrabble game will take place on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 2PM.  Scrabble is considered by the library to be a gaming event.  It certainly is a welcome opportunity for the senior community of Calumet City to come together and enjoy an afternoon of social interaction and exciting scrabble games.

Senior Needs at Adult Services

The supervisor of Adult Services has recently pointed out that gaming is enjoyed by every age group in the community.  Senior gaming such as bingo, enhances good mental and emotional health.  Scientific research has proven that activities requiring the use of the thought process are beneficial to seniors as a means of staving off mental degeneration.  Surprisingly, it has been found that physical activities lead to a more positive attitude.

The combinations of physical and cognitive exercises are essential ingredients in maintaining the mental well-being of seniors.  The Alzheimer’s Association suggests that crossword puzzles, reading, memory training and writing all contribute to a healthier and sharper mind. Gaming, with its social aspects and excitement, provide to seniors an entertaining world.  There’s something to be said for smiling.
